DEAD RECKONING

A generative FM drum machine with a mind of its own. It writes the patterns; you steer with heat, punch in effects with your fingers, and keep the loops. Free, in the browser, on desktop and phone.

An instrument that plays back

Nine voices — kick, snare, hat, perc, 808, tom, clap, metal and a granular lane — driven by a brain that writes grooves, fills and events phrase by phrase. You don't program it. You lean on it.

One big control

Heat runs from sparse and clean to dense, bright and glitching. Every voice, pattern and effect listens to it, so a single drag reshapes the whole machine.

It writes as it plays

Grooves, fills, drum events, 808 basslines and a granular lane, phrase by phrase. Leave evolve on and it keeps moving; switch it off and it holds still.

Nine punch-ins, all at once

Sweep, dive, crush, gate, repeat, slice, tape stop, pump and build. Each is its own X/Y pad: touch to engage, let go and it springs home. Hold any combination.

Loops, cut on the bar

The last eight bars are always recording. Save 1, 2, 4 or 8 bars as sample-exact 24-bit WAV loops. On a phone they go straight to the share sheet.

A memory of itself

A 20-second granular buffer of its own output, re-sprayed in four modes, drawn the way hardware samplers show grains reading through time.

Yours, no strings

Everything you make with Dead Reckoning is yours. Use it however you like — no credit or permission needed.

Every cell is a control

Drag, tap, hold. Each panel draws what it's doing: the step ring, the heat burst, grains reading through the buffer, the countdown to the next bar.

Straight out of the capture

Four-bar loops saved from the instrument, untouched apart from level matching. They loop seamlessly — that's how capture cuts them.

Made for thumbs, too

On a phone it folds into two pages: play (heat, the punch-in pads, save) and shape (the slow controls, grain, space, kit). Multi-touch throughout — hold three effects and ride heat with a fourth finger.

Under the hood

The FM TEK engine, grown out of FM TEK III.

Sound
FM drum voices, an 808 voice, per-voice inserts (tape, comb, ring, chop), a 32-grain granular lane, reverb and synced delay, and a master performance block — written in Max/MSP gen~.
Engine
Exported with RNBO to WebAudio. The same engine is headed for a hardware box and a plugin.
Brain
JavaScript: grooves, fills, events, kit families, tuning to the key, weirdness, evolution. One brain file drives the Max kit and the browser alike.
Interface
Canvas cells in a CRT grid, in the manner of instrument panels; one layout for desktop and tablet, a two-page layout for phones.
Capture
An AudioWorklet ring buffer with bar marks from the engine's clock, so every loop starts and ends exactly on the bar.
Made
Designed and built by Unauthorised Output, in collaboration with Claude.
